Interesting timing by Reds manager Walt Jocketty, whose club opens an important three-game series on Monday night against Edmonds' former team, the second-place Cardinals. Edmonds, 40, has posted a respectable .843 OPS, eight home runs and 20 RBI in 217 at-bats this season. The Reds have a crowded outfield and playing time will be limited, but he's a nice guy to have off the bench, especially if Cincy makes it to October.

The struggling and overpaid Guillen was designated for assignment by Kansas City on Thursday afternoon after batting .255/.314/.429 over 396 at-bats and .151/.198/.260 after the All-Star break. Buchholz hasn't pitched since 2008 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He pitched extremely well that year in a relief role with the Rockies, but the right-hander didn't fare too well in his rehab outings and should be left on the waiver wire until he shows he's regained his old form.

Ludwick has been out since June 25 with a calf injury. The Cardinals will welcome him back after getting shut out Friday for the second straight game, which is the first time that's happened during the Tony La Russa era.
