Mike Sweeney will announce his retirement at the Royals' spring training complex in Surprise,
Arizona Friday. It will likely involve him signing a one-day contract so he can retire as a member
of the organization he came up with. He also might accept some sort of front office
job with the Royals, which is something that's been mentioned as a possibility once
his playing days were over. Sweeney will retire as a career .297/.366/.486 hitter with
215 home runs and 909 RBI over 16 big league seasons. Knee and back problems kept
him from having an even better career.
